Thorin announces consulting partnership with Guild

The organization co-owned by David Beckham has secured the services of the British analyst as it makes its entry into CS:GO.

Duncan "?Thorin?" Shields has entered a consulting partnership with Guild in order to help the British organization create its CS:GO division and establish itself in the game, the veteran analyst has announced on Twitter.

"I will help Guild develop their model for building the team and advise on players and staff I think appropriate to aid them in establishing themselves as a significant force in this part of the industry," Thorin said to explain what his role as a consultant will entail.

    Thorin links up with Guild

"As we move to a phase more closely resembling a traditional sports structure with proper coaching staff it is only logical that General Managers build teams to their vision with the help and expertise of those who know the scene and the players they will select from."

Mostly known for their ties with former football star David Beckham, Guild are a publicly-traded esports organization launched in 2019 who currently compete in Rocket League, FIFA, and VALORANT. In Riot Games' tactical shooter, Guild are represented by a Swedish team that includes former fnatic and NiP player William "?draken?" Sundin.

The most famous brand that hasn't won a big international championship in CSGO, and that hadn't had a team representing the name since 1.6 until like 2018. Brazil fans delusional lol. I'd say Fnatic (on previous achievements and legacy) or Astralis are the biggest brands in CSGO as of right now.

Man, Thorin is just PRing himself as much as possible in different ways. He does it by twitter beefs, some logical/analitical content about players, bold statements and so on. His "conflicts" between Astralis, Niko and others are just to PR himself. But I agree with you, it would be better if he would be true man of human values. From the other point of view he wouldn't be so amuzing / bright person with these values.

If OG has a former observer, I think thorin being a analyst and pundit is actually more impressive. Also he refers to those people because if a 20+ years of experience influential figure has less knowledge about cs than fortnite players in faze then we need to rethink something here
    2020-11-06 10:59

I mean, you literally just nitpicked the worse ones and in the original reply he got some wrong OGs manager isn't a former observer sure they might be Fortnite players but they were a cod pro for years.
    2020-11-06 10:59
I mentioned people who got no connection, OG excluded because I was wrong, who run the orgs or the CSGO divisions. Nobody seems to be mad at that But when a new org get a consultant, who have been in the scene for 18 years, people freak out because he isn't a former player. This mindset and toxicity is what keep certain teams and players in a "medieval" mindset

This org is not co-owned by Beckham. Actually, Guild Esports paid him to use his name in marketing materials so they can call him "co-owner" and "investor" in all those press-releases. HLTV confirmed fake news. forbes.com/sites/mikestubbs/2020/10/13/g.. The organization (Guild Esports) entered into an influencer agreement with Footwork Productions, a Beckham-owned company that was set up for “the exploitation of David Beckham’s name and image rights.” The five-year deal, which was inked on May 4, 2020, compensates Beckham for becoming the “face of Guild Esports” with a minimum amount of £15.25M ($19.78M) during the term of the contract.

i mean from a marketing pov it′s quite smart. Furthermore it shows the org is legit and has cash. Also it′s not like shaq (nrg) or steve aoki (rogue) actually manage the teams so i′m ok with it. Still 16M euros for an esports org (which are notorious to operate on liltle in terms of profits) to spend on what′s essencially a brand ambassador might be a strecht but hey that′s what you get with crazy VC money.

Guild Esports worth $25.94 million on London Stock Exchange. So 4.78% stake is $1.2 million investment after Guild going to pay Beckham's company 17x more in 5-year deal. There is no business that would agree to return 1700% ROI.

The fact that he will be paid in the next few years a lot more than what he invested in the company doesn't deny the fact that he owns a piece of it. Imagine that the company's valuation skyrockets in the future (doubtful, yes). He could sell his share and make a lot of money. It's two different deals at stake here. But the fact is that he owns a piece of the company.

im confused with that question. are you suggesting that thorin got a job at a major because of his in game analytical skills? if that's the case i suppose you haven't watched any majors. it is in fact very doubtful that thorin understands the game beyond reading statistics and memorizing liquipedia. i don't remember a single thing he ever said at the desk that indicated otherwise.

whatever man he got employed to manage a cs go team, and talks 1 on 1 with people that create teams and takes them to the top, like idc, but clearly he sees the game.
    2020-11-06 02:20
    1 reply
he's a brand at this point. he's pretty mediocre at managing it but good enough to still generate interest. the reason i say he is mediocre is because his fuck ups on twitter had cost him multiple job opportunities. he'd probably still be invited to the analyst desk in every big tournament were he a bit smarter about his conduct. he's an okay journalist and he's been present forever in the scene, knows a lot of people etc that's why he gets to talk 1 on 1 with people within the scene. that doesn't mean he's anywhere close to being a good analyst. have you ever seen thorin break up a round the way ynk or spunj do? i can't remember a single instance.

Define minimal, i highly doubt you know how high analyst/caster day rates are if you think that. Or how much writing for a popular outlet pays

I’ll rephrase, having a job in scene is not an achievement. Anyone could do it no talent involved. Winning a tournament is an achievement.
    2020-11-06 10:45
    1 reply
Simply false, talking in a public setting is a skill, many people even fear it. Being interesting and informative is another layer of difficulty. Winning a tournament is an achievement for a CS:GO player. Casting a tournament is an achievement for a CS:GO analyst/commentator. Pretty basic logic. If it were easy we wouldnt see the same 4-5 caster duos and half dozen analysts at every tournament cause everyone could do it at the same level.
    2020-11-06 10:57
Why not? A lot ot top team GMs dont even know anything, thorin knows most of what goes on behind the scene
