ESIC issues bans to seven MDL Australia players for betting-related offences

The organisation has revealed the initial findings of the joint investigation with ESEA, with further updates to be issued "in due course".

The Esports Integrity Commission (ESIC) announced on Friday the first round of results from an investigation into match-fixing and betting in ESEA's Mountain Dew League (MDL), sanctioning seven players in the Australian division of the league with 12-month bans.

Through a joint investigation with ESEA, the esports watchdog association found seven individuals who were involved in placing bets on MDL matches, including in their own games. Additionally, it was discovered that several associates of the offending players also placed bets on matches involving these players, with further details to be revealed at a later date as the betting activities of those individuals are still under investigation.

In its statement, ESIC mentioned that it had referred this matter to law enforcement due to the nature of the offences. Meanwhile, the organisation urged professional players to avoid placing any bets on a game that they earn an income from in order to preserve the integrity of the esports landscape.

The bans will have effect across ESIC's members, which include ESL, DreamHack and BLAST, with the esports watchdog group calling on non-member tournament organisers to honour these sanctions.

The following seven players have been slapped with 12-months bans by ESIC:

    Australia Stephen "?stvn?" Anastasi
    Australia Akram "?ADK?" Smida
    Australia Daryl "?Mayker?" May
    New Zealand Corey "?nettik?" Browne
    Australia Damian "?JD?" Simonovic
    Australia Carlos "?Rackem?" Jefferys
    Australia Joshua "?jhd?" Hough-Devine

In closing, ESIC stated that it is still in the process of probing further breaches of their Anti-Corruption Code within MDL in both Australia and North America, including match-fixing behaviour. However, due to "significantly more complex" nature of these offences and the fact that it is working with law enforcement, ESIC says that it will require more time to provide further updates on the course of the investigation.

Yeah if they made a profit from match fixing they could be facing some serious jail time and a criminal record. "Brax" would literally be a criminal if he did that in Australia yet people cry about a lifetime ban from CS Majors.

    2020-10-23 17:29
Brax was a child so no he would not have gone to jail. There's some major hypocrisy here. Players should be life-timed. When all these arguments were happening Valve was "setting a precedent" that's literally what Every non-NA user said up until today. Now it's a totally different situation. Hypocrisy at it's finest.
    2020-10-23 17:28
    5 replies
There is no hypocrisy here at all, you just either haven't read or don't understand that this ban is not even for match fixing. This is an ESIC ban for placing a bet on CS as a professional player, some of those players didn't even bet on games they played in. They clearly state that the investigation is ongoing in regards to the players on that list who are suspected of match fixing. This is not a Valve ban and any player proven to be match fixing will no doubt receive a lifetime ban as they should. But that will be the least of their problems as they'll also be facing criminal charges. So no, no hypocrisy, just you not actually reading the article or being incapable of comprehending it.
    2020-10-23 17:39

You can face criminal charges in the US. Please get this through your head. I highly doubt these players all face charges either. You're silly if you think Valve isn't paying attention to this and has contact with ESIC. Valve bans would be way more important then getting tournament banned for a year. It could have been done it was not. End of story.
    2020-10-23 17:41
    3 replies
Not once have I said that you can't face criminal charges in the US for match fixing. Not once have I said that I think Valve is paying no attention to this. These players, unlike IBP, have not been proven guilty of match fixing. This is a one year ban for placing a bet on a CS game.
    2020-10-23 17:43
    2 replies
If you are placing bets on the matches you are playing in pretty fucking sure you aren't betting on yourself. But you are welcome to believe that. I mean literally the whole point of match fixing is you control the outcome. You are telling me these players were betting on themselves just because they really believed in the team? Give me a break.
    2020-10-23 17:49
    1 reply
Not all of those players even bet on games they or their team were participating in. You would know this if you read the information provided. It's against the ESIC code for a CS pro to bet on a CS game and they're receiving a 1 year ban for that. ESIC specifically mentioned that some of these players did bet on games they were participating in and are suspected (and I agree, probably guilty) of match fixing, they haven't specified which players in the above list that applies to. They also mentioned that the investigation into that is ongoing, ie. not yet proven, no ban for it yet. So no, I'm not telling you that they bet on themselves. I'm saying that some of them didn't even bet on games they played in and that for the others the investigation is ongoing. You can't ban them now and investigate later, that's not how anything works. This ban is for pro players placing a bet on CS, doesn't matter who it was on or what the circumstances were.
    2020-10-23 18:14
They don't go to jail in Australia for match fixing. Maybe a fine and community work

I think you're referring to the discretion our courts may apply to the typical majority of CS players, juveniles or close to it, but no the maximum penalty is 10 years imprisonment for yer greed. Though you're probably right. It'll be seen as a misdemeanor, and these laws, conceived to catch the baddest of eggs, are over analysing their corruption. But if not, and they're indeed playing little-mafioso, then I bet they'll be made an example of so it can make the news this time and they may get their concessions. TLDR; Think Counter Strike tolerates a laissez fair approach to cheaters? The answer is... No...! Although, maybe your country does.
    2020-10-24 15:48
good i hope the matchfixer rots away in his new trash game valorant
    2020-10-23 14:51
Everybody is still salty AF about the iBuyPower matchfixing scandal lol. People are stupid and don't understand that when you hit "bet", you understand that literally anything can happen. Also, people were stupid enough to risk betting thousands of dollars on a team with what...90%+ odds? They would only gain several hundred dollars while risking much more. It's not worth risking X amount of dollars if you only have a chance to gain a small fraction of X amount. Imagine betting your car or house on a football (American football OR soccer, doesn't matter) game where the team you bet on is favored to win with 95% odds. You bet a CAR or HOUSE only to win several hundred, maybe several thousand dollars at most. What if the team you bet on lost? No more car or house. That's the same idea with the iBP matchfixing scandal that people are still crying about.
    2020-10-23 16:53
Skins might translate into money through many different means, all of which aren't technically allowed by Steam, but skins still aren't money. This said, I doubt a case would hold much water if the court were presented with the facts and found the deeds resulted in the theoretical making of money, a money only worthy in the eyes of the beholder, Skins. BUT if it's with real money on a betting website, you comfortably fit into the realm of embezzlement as you're stealing from the company who's putting up the odds on a supposedly fair game. On another note: Major bans for seemingly minor fixes, a la skin-wins, are more commonplace because they don't carry real-world penalties and only serve to stimulate the economy of Steam. Whoever "Brax" is, he's probably safe from persecution until the entire world legitimise digital currencies, which brings with it certain responsibilities, such as restricting the ages of peoples who seek to make this currency. If people were jailed for fixing matches with skins as the prize, no one under the age of 18 would be allowed to even own skins, as Steam, being the sole proprietor of this currency, would have to step up and take responsibility for how it's used.

What makes you think they won't get a lifetime ban from Valve? They're still investigating, can you not read? Not only that but, unlike in NA, these guys will be facing criminal charges if there's evidence that they made a profit from this, a lifetime ban is the least of their problems.

I didn't imply that you can't at all, that was in direct reference to IBP who didn't face criminal charges. 6 players were arrested in Australia last year for match fixing, 5 have been charged with criminal offences and will have their day in court. abc.net.au/news/2020-05-03/men-charged-o.. As for the players in this HLTV article, they are currently only guilty of placing a bet which ESIC apparently gives a 1 year ban for.

OFC they are permabanned from Valve events. Valve don't need to say it everyone knows it. Just like all VAC banned player are banned from Valve events without Valve mentioning every single one of them.

i thought eu education was good but apparently not they both deserve permaban if ibp got it. ibp was set as an example

WTF u talking about education?? IBP isn't banned anymore by anyone else except Valve. Also These guys are not able to play in Valve tournaments ever. So let me break it down to you: IBP 30month ESL ban, Valve permaban. These Oceania dudes 12month ESIC ban, Valve permaban. Do you get it now or is my education not good enough so you can read and use common sense?

The problem is, that's extremely hard to police. The player could literally have an agreement with the other team, bet on their victory and share the earnings via cash with the other team. Most of the people banned in this stint probably didn't match fix, they would get far higher bans for it. Most of them were doing exactly what you suggested, simply betting on themselves to win but that's exactly the reason why it's banned.

Way too easy to throw amateur matches, where the guys involved aren’t getting paid ANYTHING to play. Why wouldn’t you drop $500 on a match and throw it, when you can’t be punished legally and it’s unregulated? Integrity the only reason, and seeing as when I played years ago Rackem used to play with his cheating buddy I’m not at all surprised.

Whether or not they go to jail remains to be seen but it sounds like the evidence is there so they'd better hope for a lenient judge if they're found guilty.

This offence can result in up to ten years imprisonment in Australia. The five will face court on September 15." pcgamer.com/five-australians-charged-fol.. The ages don't match. Having said that, if these 7 players can be proven guilty of match fixing they will face the same charges.

I think so, I don’t think they are allowed to bet at all if they are in the league. Or they got caught betting on MDL matches that they knew would be thrown, maybe some of these teams were involved in match fixing and sharing the fix to others. One of the players said on Twitter he bet on other MDL games like heaps of the players do but never on his own matches and claims he never threw a match.

To have the Athletico players go down in a match fixing scandal is too ironic. IF iBuyPower copped a life time, these players should cop a lot longer than 12 months. They were warned, they saw the consequences and quite frankly they didn't care 12 months is barely a punishment.

    2020-10-23 14:39
I always knew that jd,Nettik and Mayker were matchfixers. NICE TRU ESIC,But it is not enough,we should admit that the whole Australia cs is involved in matchfixing, some teams do it less obvious, others don’t give a fuck and throw as retards not even acting like going hard throughout the match. ESIC,simply just watch any randomly match of Australian league and you will find enormous count of evidences of matchfixing. 12 months are also ridiculous period of penalty, really it is nothing. Tones of people lost money on unsportsmanlike behavior of these morons. There should be no excuses.Permaban only.Only this solution can change brains of young gamers.

Valve killed NA CS with the lifetime bans for Dazed and Steel
    2020-10-23 16:13

Nah they just set it way back in 2015. By the time Stewie and Tarik came along there was essentially a new breed of players. It just took a lot longer to blossom in 2018 and 2019. If anything is killing the scene it's Covid. Even then it won't die. We've had bigger orgs leave before. CLG, TSM, Splyce etc
    2020-10-23 17:38
It would be nice if they made the distinction as to which players bet on their own games and who just bet on other teams. I do understand that betting on CS is against their code and they are all rightfully receiving the one year ban, but the difference is huge as it's highly unlikely that, for example, placing a bet on the grand final if you're not participating in it involves match fixing. It's clear that almost everyone commenting above is assuming that this ban is for match fixing, which isn't the case. Although it does sound like some of them may be facing some serious charges. Looking forward to the update.
    2020-10-23 16:15
It’s a shame nettik is a fucking match fixer, kid is really good and could have had a career in cs.

Valve showing it's true colors again. Nice job setting a precedent. Literally hypocrisy at it's finest. Not that they haven't applied their double standards in Dota 2 as well. Also what's with all the misinformation in this thread. You can absolutely get criminal charges for match fixing in the United States number one. Brax was an actual child though so worst case some sort of juvenile sentence that would have ended when he turned 18. The rest just didn't make it that far up the radar. It was a video game in 2014 and the vast vast majority of Americans don't know what Counter-Strike even is.

this wasn't a valve decision. It's a 3rd party decision. Valve haven't decided anything yet.

    2020-10-25 03:32
Dw American, the maximum PRISON sentence for fixing matches in Australia is... 10 years! woah! That's not a joke. Valve's 12 month ban is basically saying "You're not allowed to play while you're in court". Because as #310 states, yes it'd be a "3rd Party", probably the Federal Police. Longer bans are for people in countries, such as yourself, without the necessary by-laws to get these bad actors into real trouble with real authorities. Valve's ban is as harsh as it needs to be.

there is and there will always be, all esports not just csgo, hell even dota there are lots of unusual thing that the players do, if we were on the players shoes most of us would do the same because it's quick money right, unless ur really passionate and want to compete on higher levels then u wont think of fixing a game to earn quick bucks

as of not everyone is doing this through frnds or relatives ? we all know CSGO players make their livings mostly from betting, and they can fix on map and get rich easily. If i know one single pro player i would be rich in 1 week.
